What Does an Engagement Ring Cost?
Start with a budget that feels right for you. An engagement ring has no universal price: the total depends on the centre stone, the ring design, the metal and the work needed to bring them together. Natural and lab-grown diamonds are two options within the same decision.
Budget for the whole ring
For a ring built around a loose diamond, think in parts: centre diamond + ring and setting + any additional stones or custom work. Check whether a listed ring price includes its centre stone. A low starting price for a setting and a price for a finished ring describe different things.
What changes the price?
The centre stone is one part of the decision. Carat weight, colour, clarity, cut and shape affect its price. A 2 ct diamond is not simply twice the price of a 1 ct diamond. Compare individual stones and their grading reports rather than multiplying a price per carat.
Metal, design and setting work
Metal type, purity and the amount of metal used affect the ring cost. A slim solitaire, a diamond band and a halo use different materials and work. Ring size, additional diamonds and custom details can also change the total. Ask for a complete quote for the exact design and centre stone.
Natural or lab-grown: choose the origin you want
Natural diamonds form in the earth; lab-grown diamonds are grown using technology. Both are diamonds, with the same basic chemical composition and crystal structure. Origin is a distinct attribute and must be disclosed. Lab-grown diamonds generally have lower retail prices for comparable listed specifications; that price difference does not make either origin the right choice for everyone.
How much should you spend?
There is no required number of months’ salary. Decide on a comfortable total, reserve part of it for the ring and setting, and use the remaining amount as your loose-diamond budget. If you set a total of 20,000 SEK and reserve 7,000 SEK for the ring, you have 13,000 SEK left for the diamond. Those amounts are a planning example, not product prices.
Compare like for like before choosing
Check the exact carat weight, measurements, colour, clarity, cut where applicable, origin and grading report. Then compare what each ring quote includes: centre stone, metal, extra stones, setting work and any other charges. Do not assume that a listed loose diamond fits every ring.
