Lab-grown diamanter

Two origins. An informed choice.

This guide explains how natural and lab-grown diamonds differ, how to read their specifications and what to consider before choosing.

Your preferences, design and budget can guide the decision. Origin alone does not determine whether an individual diamond is right for you.

WHAT IS A NATURAL DIAMOND?

A natural diamond is a diamond formed within the earth under high pressure and temperature over geological time. It is recovered, then cut and polished for use in jewellery.

Each stone has its own combination of colour, clarity, proportions and inclusions. Treatments, if present, should be disclosed in its documentation.

Choose natural origin if that history matters to you, while assessing the individual stone on its own characteristics.

WHAT IS A LAB-GROWN DIAMOND?

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond created in a controlled environment. It has essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and physical and optical properties as a natural diamond.

The main growth methods are high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Growth method and any subsequent treatment should be considered alongside the stone’s specifications.

Choose laboratory-grown origin if that approach suits your preferences, while assessing the individual stone on its own characteristics.

WHAT THEY SHARE

Both categories are diamond. Neither is cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials.

Both can be cut into a wide range of shapes and set in fine jewellery. Appearance varies from stone to stone: compare the actual cut, colour, clarity and proportions rather than assuming every diamond looks the same.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT?

Natural diamonds form through geological processes; lab-grown diamonds are produced using technology.

Their growth characteristics can be distinguished by a qualified gemmological laboratory. Visual appearance alone does not reliably establish origin.

They also have different production, availability and pricing structures. Neither description is a substitute for checking the individual diamond and its report.

UNDERSTANDING PRICE

Lab-grown diamonds generally sell for less than natural diamonds with comparable listed specifications. Natural and lab-grown diamonds belong to different markets, and prices change.

Compare current prices for the stones you are considering, including cut, colour, clarity, carat weight, treatments, report and setting. A lower or higher price does not by itself determine your personal preference.

We do not present either category as an investment or promise a future resale value.

READ THE DIAMOND REPORT

Check that the report states natural or laboratory-grown origin, identifies the stone and records any relevant treatments.

Report terminology varies by laboratory, service and issue date. Read the actual report rather than assuming that reports for both categories use identical grading formats.

For example, GIA introduced Premium and Standard overall quality assessments for eligible colourless to near-colourless lab-grown diamonds from October 2025. Other report types and laboratories may use different descriptions.

COMPARE INDIVIDUAL STONES

Look at shape, proportions, colour, clarity and carat weight together. Ask to see the available images or video and review the accompanying documentation.

Two stones with similar listed grades may still differ in appearance. Natural or lab-grown origin should be clear throughout the purchase.

SOURCING AND ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION

Origin does not by itself establish environmental impact or responsible sourcing.

Mining practices, production methods, energy sources and supply chains vary. Where these factors matter to you, ask for evidence relating to the specific producer or stone.

We do not describe either category as automatically more sustainable or more ethical.

NATURAL OR LAB-GROWN: HOW TO CHOOSE

Start with the origin you prefer, the design you love and a budget that feels comfortable. Then compare individual diamonds within that brief.

You may value natural formation, prefer laboratory-grown origin, or wish to explore both. There is no single choice that suits every customer.

THE SAME CARE AND SERVICE

Whichever origin you choose, Bellive’s approach is the same: considered design, clear product information and personal guidance.

Ask us about the specific diamond, its documentation and the setting you have in mind. We will help you understand the options without choosing an origin for you.

YOUR STORY. YOUR DIAMOND.

A piece of jewellery can mark a promise, a milestone or simply your own style.

Explore natural and lab-grown diamonds with equal attention to the details that matter to you. The choice is personal. Our role is to make it informed.

The 4C’s work together to define every diamond’s character and value. By understanding them, you can make a choice that fits both your budget and your vision of the perfect stone.

Det universelle sprog, der bruges til at beskrive en diamants skønhed og værdi.

Farve

Colour describes a diamond’s body colour. Many reports use the D–Z scale for colourless to light yellow or brown diamonds; fancy-colour diamonds are evaluated differently. Report formats vary. Choose the appearance you prefer.

Klarhed

Clarity describes internal inclusions and surface blemishes. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can have these characteristics. Their visibility depends on size, position, stone shape and other factors. Review the individual report and images.

Slibning

Cut concerns a diamond’s proportions, facets and finish, which affect how it interacts with light. Shape and cut quality are different concepts. Compare the available cut information and visual appearance for the specific stone.

Carat

Carat is a measure of weight. Face-up size also depends on shape and proportions. Compare measurements as well as carat weight when considering how the diamond will look in its setting.

Husk altid

Confirm the diamond’s origin and any disclosed treatments.

Review the individual report, images, measurements and current price.

Consider the setting and your personal preferences alongside the stone.

Ask for help when you need it. We are here to explain both options.
