04 / Understand the difference

A choice with more than one consideration.

Natural diamond

Formed within the earth over geological time, then recovered, cut and polished. Natural formation may be an important part of your personal choice.

Lab-grown diamond

Created in a controlled environment using HPHT or CVD technology, then cut and polished. Laboratory-grown origin may suit your personal preferences.

Both are diamonds

Both have essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure. Individual stones vary, so compare the actual appearance, proportions and documentation.

Why prices differ

The two origins have different production, availability and market structures. Lab-grown diamonds generally cost less at comparable listed specifications. A price difference does not decide which origin you should prefer.

Read the report

Confirm the stated origin, any treatments and the stone’s measurements. Report formats vary by laboratory, service and date. A report is not a promise of future resale value.

Ask about sourcing

Origin alone does not establish environmental impact or responsible sourcing. Production methods, energy and supply chains vary. Ask for evidence for the particular stone or producer.
